Margarete Jahrmann

Margarete Jahrmann is an artist, researcher, and Professor of Experimental Game Cultures at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. Working across games, performance, installation, and artistic research, she develops playable formats that investigate the relationships between artificial intelligence, role play, and the porous boundaries between fiction and reality.
Through her interdisciplinary practice, she has pioneered the LUDIC method, exploring how cognitive, emotional, ecological, and social processes can be experienced through participatory media art.
Her work has been presented internationally, including at the 14th Havana Biennial, re Berlin, A MAZE. Berlin, the Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts in Taipei, and AIL Vienna. She received the Austrian Media Art Prize in 2025, following the Media Art Prize of the City of Vienna in 2020 for her longstanding contributions to critical media and ludic art.
Jahrmann's recent monograph, KOPFGELD and Other Ludic Experiments, brings together her artistic research at the intersection of game cultures, neuroscience, and media art. Alongside her artistic practice, she continues to shape the field of experimental game design through research, teaching, and international collaborations.
