Gabriel Massan is a Berlin-based artist from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, whose practice spans sculpture, 3D animation, games, sound, and installation. Through worldbuilding, machinima, and interactive systems, they construct speculative environments shaped by histories of violence, extraction, displacement, and survival.
Drawing on game logic, simulation, and spatial storytelling, Massan develops immersive narrative worlds in which virtual spaces become social infrastructures, contested territories, and laboratories for imagining alternative futures.
Massan has presented solo exhibitions at BOZAR, the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo, Serpentine Galleries, and The Photographers' Gallery. Their work has also been exhibited internationally at Centre Pompidou-Metz, MAAT Lisbon, the Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo (MAM-SP), Julia Stoschek Foundation, the Bangkok Art Biennale, the Hong Kong Design Institute, and HEK (House of Electronic Arts Basel).
Massan's practice brings together artistic research, digital culture, and collaborative forms of knowledge production to rethink the politics of virtual worlds and emerging technologies. In 2024, they received the Ars Electronica Prix Award of Distinction in the Interactive Art category, recognizing their contribution to contemporary media art and speculative worldbuilding.
