Alternative Monument seeks forms that connect experiences of migration with public memory culture. In response to the increasingly toxic discourse on migration in Germany, the collective creates spaces for more nuanced and affirmative conversations around migration, countering xenophobic narratives through artistic and participatory forms.

During the Transgressive Memory Festival, a new augmented reality monument created in Tunis with human rights activists and artists, in response to the externalisation of EU borders to the MENA region and its far-reaching human rights implications, will be activated in the garden at silent green. Memory Buffer is a performative and participatory intervention that approaches memory as a temporary space: one that holds collective histories, personal testimonies and possibilities of belonging as they are transferred, processed and accessed. Together, the artists and participants reflect on how memory is formed, whose experiences become visible in public space and whose are silenced—and how a monument might exist beyond a fixed, permanent form: written in code and collective processes rather than carved in stone.

Zeina Hanna leads a collective walk backwards, opening up questions around how the body receives information. This is followed by a live sound performance by Nour Sokhon, who works in real time with participants’ voices and sounds produced with objects found in the space or carried into it, creating a collective sonic portrait of what participants bring into the gathering.
